Study Area
The physically affected areas form a peripheral pattern around the epicentre of the earthquake. The earthquake formed waves in a radial pattern from the epicentre as the released energy headed outwards towards the coasts of the countries.
The physical and environmental damage was concentrated in southeast Asia and the east coast of Africa, hitting countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and eight others. In these countries there was major damage to infrastructure and the environment, as well a large number of casualties.
The physical and environmental damage is concentrated and clustered on the coasts.
